Flameaway, a multiple Graded stakes-winning son of Scat Daddy, has been retired from racing and will stand the 2020 breeding season at Darby Dan Farm in a deal brokered by Matt Bowling. Flameaway will stand his initial season at stud for $7,500 S&N.
An ultra-consistent near-millionaire earner of $911,634 for owner John Oxley and trainer Mark Casse, Flameaway was a stakes winner each year he raced from ages two to four, winning on traditional dirt, turf, and synthetic surfaces at distances from 4 ½ furlongs to 1 1/16 miles.
“We are excited to stand Flameaway, a versatile and talented son of Scat Daddy,” said Ryan Norton, stallion director at Darby Dan Farm. “He possesses a stallion’s pedigree; he was precocious, proven over all surfaces, and won sprinting and routing against some of the top runners of his generation.”
All told, Flameaway won five stakes, including the $250,000 Dixiana Bourbon S. (G3) at Keeneland and Saratoga’s $100,000 Skidmore S. at two after breaking his maiden on debut. The following season at three, he captured the $200,000 Sam F. Davis S. (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs, defeating future Grade 1 winners Catholic Boy and Vino Rosso, as well as the $100,000 Kitten’s Joy S. on turf at Gulfstream Park in his seasonal bow. Also, at three, he finished a close second in the Blue Grass S. (G2) to 2-Year-Old Champion Good Magic, second in the Jim Dandy S. (G2), and was runner-up to Quip in the $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby (G2).
He returned at four to annex the $100,000 Challenger S. in a determined effort at Tampa and placed in the Mineshaft H. (G3) at Fair Grounds. He retires having finished first or second in nine of 18 lifetime starts.
Bred by Phoenix Rising Farms, Flameaway was a $400,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Sale yearling. He is a son of Scat Daddy, the sire of 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify and leading 2018 European first-crop sire No Nay Never, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) winner Mendelssohn, and more than 70 additional stakes winners worldwide.
Flameaway hails from a deep female family. His dam, Vulcan Rose, by Fusaichi Pegasus, is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Essential Edge, and his third dam, Flame of Tara, produced Grade 1 winners Salsabil and Marju among her five black type offspring.
Flameaway has taken up residence at Darby Dan Farm and is available for inspection. For more information about Flameaway or to schedule an inspection, contact Ryan Norton at (859) 254-0424 or by e-mail at [email protected].
