Top-three First-Crop sire Flameaway now has seven individual winners after Bella Haze scored a popular victory in a six-furlong maiden special weight race Saturday afternoon at Ellis Park.
All of Flameaway’s winners have come in maiden special races except one: Dreamfyre, who broke her maiden in a stakes race. Flameaway is also one of only two First-Crop sires with a stakes winner.
Bella Haze, the 7-5 favorite in Saturday’s second race, was in a good position throughout. She kept Gloriette in her sights through the first three furlongs before challenging for the lead outside the quarter pole. She easily moved by that foe and drew off smartly in the final furlong to win by 3 ¾-lengths.
The winner is owned by Chris Curtis, who purchased her for $75,000 out of the 2023 OBS March 2-year-olds sale. Bella Haze was bred in Kentucky by John R. and John C. Penn. Her dam Cape Haze was bred to Flameaway for 2024. This is the family of Grade 1 winners Point of Entry, Pine Island and Pleasant Home.
