Beeline fought off multiple challenges in the stretch to win Saturday’s $100,000 Hutcheson S. at Gulfstream Park in the stakes debut for the 3-year-old Bee Jersey colt.
The Hutcheson has been won by champions Spectacular Bid, Holy Bull, Swale and Housebuster.
Beeline, who was a 3 ¾-length debut winner on Feb. 10 at Gulfstream, was under pressure the entire six furlongs of the Hutcheson. He broke very well from post three to take the early lead, with Ship to Shore pushing the leader through a quarter-mile in :22.28. Ship to Shore took a brief lead midway through the turn, but Beeline battled back to re-take command.
Valiant Force, last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) runner-up took his shot in upper stretch before Beeline turned him away inside the final furlong. In deep stretch Improptude made a big run, but once again Beeline was up to the task to win by a nose.
Beeline ran the six furlongs on a fast track in 1:10.59.
“He’s a really game horse. I am really impressed by him,” Beeline’s jockey Edgard Zayas said. “It takes a lot. It’s one of the toughest races when they’re so young with only one start and running against horses that have run multiple times.”
Trained by Riley Mott for Vintage Thoroughbreds LLC, Scott Estes and Brian Hanley, Beeline was purchased for $70,000 at the 2023 OBS June Two-Year-Olds and Horses Of Racing Age Sale. In his two victories, the chestnut colt has won $102,760.
Beeline was bred by Charles Fipke, who also bred Bee Jersey. Beeline is out of Secretariat Humor and is a full brother to the 4-year-old filly stakes winner Topsy. Secretariat Humor has a 2-year-old full-sister to Beeline named Tremendous Bee, a yearling full-brother and was bred back to Bee Jersey for her 2024 foal.
