Kentucky-bred Dreamaway didn’t just run away with the $100,000 Colleen Stakes at Monmouth Park on
Sunday, July 28, the 2-year-old daughter of Flameaway may have run her way into contention for the
Breeders’ Cup.
Trainer Wesley Ward indicated after the impressive 5 ¼-length score by Dreamaway in the Colleen,
accomplished in :55.64 over the Monmouth turf course, that his charge might target the Breeders’ Cup
Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) at Del Mar.
“We’re thinking about sending her next to California for the Speakeasy Stakes (Oct. 5 at Santa Anita),”
said Ward. “We’ve been looking to get one out there and this may be the one to where we can get
settled in. Based on how she ran today, she is Breeders’ Cup caliber. That race will solidify if she is a
Breeders’ Cup horse or not.”
Bred and owned by John Oxley, Dreamaway showed sharp speed early to obtain a clear lead. She set the
pace on the inside, vied to the turn, and showed the way into the stretch. She responded willingly when
set down and quickly drew off in the stretch to win in hand.
Dreamaway defeated colts on the dirt in her Keeneland debut on April 21 and remains undefeated
through her first two career outings.
“Actually, her first race to me was better than this one and I will tell you why: She’s a tiger when she
gets in front like she did today,” related Ward. “Sometimes when she gets behind, she doesn’t quite
work as well. When she gets to the front, she’s a demon. She won’t let anyone by her.”
A leading first-crop sire a year ago and a top second-crop sire this year, Flameaway is represented by 37
